Bacteriostatic water is a sterile solution containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol that inhibits bacterial proliferation in laboratory settings without necessarily eliminating existing microorganisms.

This specialized preparation serves as an important diluent for research compounds that require reconstitution from powder form, maintaining the stability and integrity of sensitive materials during experimental procedures. The antimicrobial properties of bacteriostatic water may potentially extend the usability timeframe of reconstituted substances in controlled laboratory environments, allowing for multiple samplings from the same preparation while minimizing the risk of contamination.

Researchers working with delicate cellular cultures and tissue samples often utilize this solution when precise dilution protocols are required, as it helps maintain experimental consistency by preventing unwanted microbial interference that could otherwise compromise research outcomes.

For proper storage, bacteriostatic water should be kept at room temperature away from light, heat, and moisture. Unopened vials typically have a shelf life of up to two years, but once opened, they should be discarded after 28 days even if not fully used
